About GAVIN
Born and raised in rural Central Queensland, Gavin Ireland developed an appreciation for the natural world and an interest in art from an early age. His artistic journey began in childhood, if he wasn’t exploring his natural surrounds he would be spending his time drawing and sketching — a creative spark that would evolve to see him selling his art at the age of twenty-one.
Gavin’s early work focused on native wildlife, fish and birds. Over time his artistic scope expanded to include pencil portraits of Australian war veterans and painting military scenes, demonstrating a commitment to eye for detail and a respect for the subjects he portrays.
A significant influence on Gavin’s art is his late father, Keith Ireland, an internationally recognised bird photographer. Drawing inspiration from Keith’s extensive archive of photographic prints and slides, Gavin continues to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Australian fauna through his art.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Gavin has dedicated four decades to being a school teacher, engaging students in creative and artistic activities whenever possible. His school-based contributions include large-scale murals, suspended sculptures, and commemorative displays for Anzac Day ceremonies. Through initiatives such as the “Adopt a Veteran” program, Gavin developed strong connections with the veteran community, underscoring his commitment to accurately representing the experiences and sacrifices of those who have served.
Gavin’s artworks are held in private collections throughout Australia, spanning from Tasmania to Darwin, and have been recognised in regional and state-wide art competitions. His military paintings are displayed in museums, RSL clubs, special anniversary commemorations, and award ceremonies, including pieces focused on the Vietnam War. In addition, he has illustrated four children’s books in the Rodney Rainbowfish series, further showcasing his versatility as an artist.
Currently based in the Noosa hinterland on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Gavin continues to create works that honour Australia’s natural and historical heritage, blending technical precision with a sense of place and personal connection.
